Bad Sleeping Position

One of the most common causes of neck pain, hyperextension of the neck muscles can occur because of awkward sleeping positions that put additional strain on your neck and body. The two sleeping positions that are easiest on your neck include sleeping on your side or on your back.

The worst position is sleeping on your stomach as it causes your back to arch and your neck to be turned to the side. Generally speaking, sleeping problems (i.e. difficulty falling asleep, difficulty waking up in the morning, trouble staying asleep) have also been found to be major sources of chronic musculoskeletal pain.

Poor Posture

Poor posture caused by too many hours hunched over a computer or smartphone, repetitive motions from manual labor, or any other number of behaviors that lead to straining are bound to cause neck pain. While poor posture can be age-related, any activity that causes you to tilt your head forward places additional stress on your neck and shoulders.

To avoid developing poor posture, make sure to stand and sit up straight. In this position, your ears should be over your shoulders, and your shoulders should be in a straight line over your hips. You should also give yourself plenty of breaks when working in front of a computer for long hours.

Whiplash

Whiplash is caused by a person’s head being thrown forward and back in a quick, awkward motion. Depending on the severity of the whiplash, injuries can occur to the spine, ligaments, muscles, nerves, discs, or tissues in the neck. Whiplash is also one of the most common neck injuries resulting from of a rear-end car collision.
